Ever since I saw the movie Milk, I have been trying to get my friends to see it. I'm surprised their reaction most of the time. "That wasn't a real civil rights movement," one said. I couldn't believe someone would say that in 2009. Why is sexual orientation different than skin color to some people? Another said, "Why should it matter? There's only like 5% of the population that is homosexual anyway. Why should I care what they can and can't do." A few have asked me if I am really a "dyke" because I'm so "sympathetic to the plight of the gays." That's when I realized that maybe I need new friends...lol. In this place, you can't understand that everyone deserves basic human rights without being part of that group. I mean, I'm a hippie, so I would have voted for Milk had I lived in the Haight Ashbury district at the time, but that's not the point. Anyway, I will keep trying to spread the message no matter what in this backward, homophobic town. I've thought about moving, but that doesn't change anything here. That just puts out the hope, the light, and lets the hatred fester even more.
