A month ago, I was ready to run away to San Francisco and leave this town behind after I graduate. Lately I have been thinking hard about who is going to clean up this town. The other day, I was having a conversation with my sister about gay marriage. She said she didn't really agree with it, but she didn't think it was a big deal either. I told her that I didn't think that the majority should be voting on an issue that only affects (effects? ugh) the minority. She gave me a raised eyebrow at this comment.

An equality initiative in a conservative, prejudiced town...

"Gays aren't really people, and they don't deserve to have rights," spewed my dear brother-in-law this afternoon. How can so much hatred come from one person? I mean what could have happened to make someone dislike an entire group so much? Even if something horrible was done to him by a gay person, that doesn't mean that all of them are the same way. I don't understand taking anger out on an entire group instead of the person you are really angry with.

Ever since I saw the movie Milk, I have been trying to get my friends to see it. I'm surprised their reaction most of the time. "That wasn't a real civil rights movement," one said. I couldn't believe someone would say that in 2009. Why is sexual orientation different than skin color to some people? Another said, "Why should it matter? There's only like 5% of the population that is homosexual anyway. Why should I care what they can and can't do." A few have asked me if I am really a "dyke"… Continue
