Can someone please explain to me one thing?

The thing I do not really understand is why the Gay Marriage is an issue at all. I am a conservative Christian in the midwest so most people would probably assume that I am a hateful individual against any type of Gay or Lesbian. The thing that does not make any sense to me is why Marriage is not taken out altogether as a government institution.
