Never Blend In

Okay, I've signed up for this group, but I'm not clear on its mission. I'm a very strong Libertarian and I'm not in favor of the government making decisions about our personal lives. So, while I obviously am in favor of "rights" for everyone, I believe they should be merely protected from violation by the government, but not granted or governed. So, I am NOT here to start an argument, just trying to find out if and how I fit into helping your cause.

Hi! Very happy to have you here.

I'm also a Libertarian. I personally wish we had fewer laws, but I can't stand behind laws that are passed that take away rights from a minority that are held by a majority. In this case, I'm lobbying for gay marriage. Would love to know your thoughts on Prop 8 in California and other similar laws that were passed.
I understand that certain laws are created to "protect" us, the American people. I can not understand why and when we stopped having a government without religious ties. Our country was created on the belief of freedom. Yet it seems that each day we create more laws that take away our freedoms. I was listening to the radio the other day on NPR and they mentioned that previously presidents use to swear into office by using (I think they said the constitution) and now they swear in on the bible. Don't get me wrong I don't have anything against belief in the bible but I feel that our religious beliefs should not decide how are laws are governed. I feel that, in the past, when these two things got intertwined it caused issues for every person. Not just Americans. I have no issue with gay marriage. I live in Kansas City which is on the border of MO and KS. Gays have little to no rights here because of very strong connection between religion and government here. I am unsure how we can change this situation.
Just found this on Reason: http://www.reason.com/blog/show/126534.html

I'd also prefer that the state stay out of marriage entirely, but unfortunately that's not the case and that's not going to be the case for quite some time. Marriage is a state institution and as long as it is, I feel that any two people should be able to marry. Marriage even trickles up to the federal level, because of tax returns.
We must be related Ariel? :-)

The best thing you can do is continue to tell people that church/state needs to remain separate. Having any part of our government mixed up in religion is dangerous. We need to get rid of all of that God stuff.

The take I have on it is simple:

If state, federal and public institutions recognizes another institution (marriage in this case); barring citizens from that institution is unconstitutional, should be illegal, and is flat out immoral.

State and Federal institutions (such as the IRS) give greater financial gains to married couples. Public institutions such as schools, adoption centers and hospitals recognize (in favor) married spouses and grant privileges to them accordingly.

If this was not the case, Religion would be the governing matter in marriage, at which - even still - laws should not bar a couple from ever getting married.

Making a case for a ban of marriage through any legal system completely moot.
